Our Aftercare Support Services
Following your pet’s in-home euthanasia, we can assist you in deciding what to do with your pet’s remains and connect you with the services that suit you best.
If you require additional supports, such as grief counselling, please contact us.
Communal Pet Cremation
With communal cremation, your pet is gently placed into the crematory together with other pets and the ashes are collected and scattered in a respectful manner.
Private Pet Cremation
Private cremation provides you with the opportunity to keep your pet’s cremated remains as a permanent and personal keepsake. When you choose private cremation, your treasured pet will be the only pet in the cremation chamber during the cremation process. When the cremation process is complete, we ensure that you receive only the cremated remains of your pet in your choice of one of our standard urns.
At-Home Pet Burial
Burying your pet at home or your private property is another option for aftercare. Please note, that regulations regarding pet burial at home are subject to municipal by-laws in your area.
Common Questions About After Care
Will I get my pet's ashes back?
With private cremation, yes – you receive only your own pet’s ashes. With communal cremation, your pet’s ashes are scattered in a respectful manner and are not returned.
What is the difference between flame cremation and aquamation?
Flame cremation uses carefully controlled heat to reduce your pet’s body to bone fragments. These are then carefully processed into the ashes that can be returned to you.
Aquamation, sometimes called water cremation, is an alternative that uses water, heat, and a natural alkaline process rather than flame. The process gently returns your pet’s body to its natural elements, leaving the mineral remains of the bones. These are then dried and carefully processed before being returned to you.
Both options provide a respectful and dignified way to care for your pet after they have passed. There is no right or wrong choice—only what feels most comfortable for you and your family.
If you are unsure which option is right for you, we are always here to answer your questions and guide you through the choices with care.
Is at-home burial allowed where I live?
It depends — pet burial at home is subject to your municipality’s by-laws, so we recommend checking with your local municipality before choosing this option. We’re happy to help you think through it.
Can I get a paw print or other keepsake?
Dr. Lee will provide an ink paw print and fur clippings. Regardless of a communal or private cremation, the pet crematory can also provide other memorial items (ie. clay paw print, jewellery, etc.)
When do I need to decide on an aftercare option?
This is usually decided prior to the appointment however we understand that it is difficult to make these decisions when emotions are at play. As long as you know you would like Dr. Lee to take away your pet, we can place a hold until you decide on a communal or private cremation.
Aftercare arrangements are coordinated by Dr. Yvonne Lee and her team, so your pet is cared for with the same compassion after as before. Learn more about Dr. Lee →
